The last hour, the one you stay out for

From 5 pm the catamaran leaves the anchorages and runs down St Martin's leeward coast, from Grand Case to the beaches of Baie Rouge. It is the only part of the day spent sailing for the view rather than to reach somewhere: an easy pace, nobody in the water, the hostess serving drinks in the cockpit or out on the trampolines.

Sunset shifts by more than an hour across the year, while the return to port stays fixed at 6.30 pm. From late August to mid-April — the whole St Martin season — the sun goes down before you are alongside, so you watch it from the boat. At the height of summer it sets after the scheduled return, and the end of the day at sea then takes place in the low light that comes before it.

This is the charter people pick for an occasion, or for the last day of a stay. The difference in price against the full day covers the extra hour and a half at sea and the evening service on board; everything else — crew, catering, swimming gear — is the same.

What time does the sun set in St Martin?
Between roughly 5.35 pm in mid-November and 6.50 pm in late June, in Marigot — the table above gives the month-by-month reference. As the return to port is fixed at 6.30 pm, you watch the sunset from the boat from late August to mid-April; between 20 April and 28 August it drops after the return time, and the end of the day takes place in the light that precedes it.
Do we come back after dark?
No. The return to Marina Fort Louis is set for 6.30 pm, before nightfall. New Life Catamaran runs day charters only: no night sailing, and no night on board.
What actually changes compared with the full day?
An hour and a half more at sea, and a different end to the day: instead of heading straight back, the boat runs down the west coast with drinks served on board along the way. The morning and the middle of the day are the same, with the same possible anchorages and the same crew.
What should we bring for the end of the day?
A light layer: on the way home the boat is under way and the temperature drops as soon as the sun gets low. Bring something for your shoulders too if you have spent the afternoon in the water.
